Halotherapy, or salt therapy, involves inhaling air filled with tiny salt particles. Halotherapy is an alternative treatment for lung problems such as asthma, bronchitis, nagging cough, etc. Salt is a natural and safe ingredient with no notable side effects.

History- Halotherapy is not a recent discovery. As a matter of fact, in 12th century Eastern Europe, visiting salt caves for health reasons was common. In the 1800s, a local doctor observing salt miners in his village in Poland found an interesting phenomenon. Despite working in mines all day, the Polish miners were unusually healthy. They had few, if any, respiratory conditions. They didn’t get the colds or coughs that were common among other people in the village.‌ His research showed that the salty air the miners breathed helped keep their lungs free from infection and allergies. As a result of this discovery, Eastern European salt mines and hicaves became popular tourist destinations world-wide. People visited in order to breathe the salt air and relieve lung issues.

Types- Salt therapy is divided into 2 types: Active and Passive.

  • Active- a room or enclosure has a machine (halogenerator), which contains microcrystals of salt. The halogenerator then circulates the particles throughout the enclosure. Participants actively inhale these particles for a set period of time. There are two types of halo machines: wet and dry. Dry halogenerators deliver a microcrystal mist which is not visible. Wet generators deliver the salt as a visible wet mist. Both types, when inhaled, are very effective.

  • ‌Passive- The room does not have a machine to circulate the salt, but instead, is filled with different types of salts. It functions like a salt cave, with controlled temperature and humidity. While useful, it is less effective than the active type.

Benefits- According to research, halotherapy can help respiratory conditions, skin problems, and allergies.

Inherently, salt air is-
