Longevity and YOU

 What IS longevity, anyway?

As a concept, longevity means “living a long life while keeping good physical and mental health”. Sounds reasonable. “But I am not (that) old”, you say. Then prepare well so that when you are, it is with quality of life and grace. Just because you are old (or are inevitably going to be old) doesn’t mean your vigor needs to be diminished. It’s a choice you make daily.

What Things are We Talking About?

  • Lifespan: The total number of years a person lives from birth to death.

  • Healthspan: The number of years a person lives free from chronic diseases or serious illness.

  • Life expectancy: The average number of years a group of people can expect to live.

What Factors Influence Longevity?

While genetics might set a baseline for how long you live, your daily habits have a massive impact on your actual results.

Habits?

  • Regular exercise: Physical activity keeps your brain, heart, lungs, and muscles strong. Of great importance are walking, running, jogging, resistance training (swimming counts, too), cardio training (did you know that 30 minutes of sauna have the same effect as 30 minutes of traditional cardio exercise?) How often? At least 3 times a week. Also- engage in hormetic stress- cold shower, cold plunge, cryotherapy, sauna. Hormetic stress is a form of exercise, too.

  •

  • Rest Days: Pay attention to rest days as well. As you age it takes longer to recover. Aches and pains from working out? Try a massage or massage chair (NovoXT), acupuncture or acupressure session (Ceragem V6).

  •

  • Healthy diet: Eating nutritious foods helps slow down biological aging. Become a label reader. Avoid ultra-processed food (cheap and easy) and opt for real food. Learn to cook. Shop at farmer’s markets where you get to know the source of your food.

  •

  • Quality sleep: Adults should aim for seven to nine hours of sleep every night. Have a deliberate schedule for sleeping. Put up devices an hour before and begin a wind-down process. Difficulty turning off your brain? Try training your brain with a BrainTap session. Engage in Box Breathing (inhale for a 4 count, hold for a 4 count, exhale for a 4 count, hold for a 4 count while exhaled. Repeat 8-10 times) to relax yourself.

  •

  • Social connection: Spending time with friends and community is directly linked to a longer life. Join a church or social club. Volunteer in your community. Join a choir or theater group. Connect, connect, connect! Humans are social creatures.

  •

  • Learn a new skill: Learn a new language, take a different route home from work or the grocery, play games, memorize passages from a book or article to recite (to anyone or just you), count change in your head when you go to the store, and more. Practice cursive writing. The brain is an agile organ when properly and regularly challenged. It grows stale when not challenged.

  •

  • Occasionally do NOTHING: Take time to watch the sunset (or sunrise), stare out a window or sit on a porch and ponder life. Or find a public place and people-watch. It is healthy to practice just BE-ing and not always DO-ing. You are a human BE-ing.
